The first period instrument string quartet to be selected as BBC New Generation Artists, the Consone Quartet are making a name for themselves with their honest and expressive interpretations of classical and romantic repertoire. The Quartet performs on instruments with period strings and bows, and violinist Agata Daraškaitė likens the resulting texture to that of analogue photographs. The group’s readings are well calibrated to the sound, producing some unusually gutsy performances. With a perfectly homogeneous tone and implacable rhythmic precision, they honor the musical heritage, without concessions or grandiloquence, but a good mix of charm, profundity as well as contrasts that guarantee a real field of discussion between the instruments and in which the constant change of alliances becomes exciting. Such a path is chosen by the musicians of the Consone Quartet, which was founded at the Royal College of Music in London and started its professional career in 2015. Their debut recording explored music by Haydn and Mendelssohn and was described by The Strad as an album “that instantly leaps out of the stereo at you as something special.” This season they launch a new partnership with Linn Records, opening with the complete string quartets of Felix Mendelssohn.
